Hidden paths through the banana plantations of Paul do Mar
Paul do Mar is not only known for its waves, the ocean, and spectacular sunsets—the banana plantations here are also a little paradise in themselves. And best of all, these green labyrinths are not only exciting for adults, but also ideal for children and families who are looking for a little adventure.
Every day, I walk through the plantations two or three times with my dog Kitty, and each time it feels different. Sometimes it is quiet, with only the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves accompanying us. Sometimes you can hear the water splashing quietly through the canals that supply the plants. And sometimes I meet workers who are tending to the shrubs or clearing the paths. The atmosphere is particularly magical in the morning or evening—the deep green leaves of the banana trees glow in the warm sunlight, and the plantation almost feels like a secret garden.
Many paths are little-known secret routes hidden between the fields. They invite you to drift along, discover new things, and take in your surroundings with all your senses. The well-known coastal path by the sea is beautiful, but on hot days, the cool paths through the plantations are a welcome change—calming, shady, and simply special.
Bananas through the ages

It is particularly exciting to observe the banana plants in their different stages of development. Sometimes you discover a fresh flower that is just beginning to bloom. A few steps further on, small green fruits are still hanging, and in another place, the bananas are almost ready for harvest. In a single walk around, you can often see several stages of development—from the tender beginning to the full fruit. I have photographed this many times and am always amazed at how diverse this cycle is.
Since I occasionally work on the plantations myself, I can also share some interesting background information during my tours. If you would like to read more about my personal experiences on the plantation, you can find a separate article here: My blog about working on banana plantations.
My Banana Walk
For anyone who wants to consciously discover the secret paths of Paul do Mar, I offer my Banana Walk. Together we walk through the plantations, experiencing the tranquility, colors, and special magic of this green world. Along the way, I share stories and knowledge about banana cultivation in Madeira.

The Mandala Banana Walk for children

I have something very special for children: the Mandala Banana Walk. We start at the beach, where each child chooses their own stone. Together, we then walk through the plantations with their secret paths until we arrive at a beautiful spot. There, each child transforms their stone into a very personal lucky stone—painted with colorful mandalas.
The result is a combination of nature, adventure, and creativity—a hands-on experience that children will remember for a long time to come.
