An exciting experience for families among banana blossoms, large leaves, and little surprises
Exploring Madeira with children is a real adventure—especially if you want to get to know the island’s green, unspoiled side. One of my favorite family activities in Madeira is the banana walk in Paul do Mar, a leisurely stroll through the plantations on the south coast.
I recently had the pleasure of accompanying a family with three children, and together we enjoyed an unforgettable morning surrounded by palm trees, plants, and fresh sea air. The path took us through narrow alleys, past hidden trails, and along lush green banana trees that characterize the landscape of Paul do Mar.
Along the way, we saw different stages of the banana plant—from the large purple flower to the downward-growing fruit to the ripe bananas that later bend back upward. I explained how often a plant bears fruit, how large and strong the leaves become, and how water reaches the plantations via the traditional levadas. We also talked about the hard work of the pickers – many of whom spend hours in the sun every day carefully tending to each shrub.
The children listened attentively and asked lots of curious questions. One particularly lovely moment was when one of the girls took a piece of an old banana flower with her as a little “key” and collected mini bananas along the way, which are removed from the plants because they will not grow any further. These little experiences made the tour particularly exciting for the children – they discovered, marveled, and learned at the same time.
We took the time to experience our surroundings with all our senses: the scent of the plants, the rustling of the leaves in the wind, and the warm sun on our skin. My little dog Kitty accompanied us and kept us smiling and taking little breaks along the way.

At the end of our walk, we arrived at the beach at Bar de Pedra, where the children tried a non-alcoholic Nikita, the typical drink of Madeira—a delicious mixture of pineapple, ice cream, and fruit juice.
A few days later, I met the family again at family yoga, and the children excitedly told me that they now watch the banana tree in the garden of their Airbnb every day. They now knew which leaves were sprouting, when a new flower would appear, and how much care went into each fruit.
Moments like these show me time and again how important it is to teach children about nature and mindfulness—in a playful and exciting way.
If you are visiting Madeira with children and looking for a special activity that combines learning, exercise, and fun, the banana walk in Paul do Mar is just the thing. It is ideal for families who want to spend time together, discover new things, and experience Madeira’s nature at the same time.
Tip: Whale watching & dolphin tours – Another highlight for Madeira with children
If you are traveling to Madeira with children, don’t miss out on a dolphin tour or whale watching trip. Boats depart daily from Calheta and other locations to observe these fascinating marine animals in their natural habitat. This is an unforgettable experience for families – exciting, educational, and a real adventure.
The family who was with me on the banana walk told me that they had been on a whale and dolphin watching tour in Calheta two days earlier. They were incredibly lucky: dolphins and whales were swimming on both sides of the boat at the same time, which was of course the absolute highlight of the children’s vacation. The excitement was palpable—the fresh sea air, the sound of the waves, and the majestic animals so close up were simply breathtaking.
The speedboat tour is particularly exciting—fast but safe, and ideal for families with children who love adventure. Even if you don’t see any whales, the trip itself is a wonderful experience on the Atlantic Ocean.
